THURSDAY 20TH OCTOBER, Sturminster Newton Leisure Centre – Public Meeting

PUBLIC MEETING
STURMINSTER NEWTON LEISURE CENTRE
THE EXCHANGE
20 OCTOBER at 6pm

Sturminster Newton Leisure Centre has been run by the Jurassic Leisure Trust since April 2009 following North Dorset District Council’s decision in 2008 to withdraw its budgeted funding.

The Trust was originally appointed to run the Leisure Centre on the basis that it would eventually break-even but unfortunately it has not been able to run the centre without subsidy and it’s now running with a significant deficit.  The District Council can no longer afford to sustain this level of subsidy in the present financial environment and by mutual agreement the Trust will vacate the premises on 4 December 2011.

Extensive discussions have taken place with Sturminster Newton Town Council, Sturminster Newton High School and the SturQuest community partnership to try and find a way of keeping the centre open in its current form. Unfortunately, to date this has not provided a solution that would be financially viable.

Dorset County Council and North Dorset District Council hope that community clubs and organisations, together with Sturminster Newton High School, will be able to continue to use the centre.  However, it must be achieved without continuing council subsidy.

Users of the leisure centre are invited to a meeting at The Exchange on 20 October at 6pm to discuss ways of keeping the centre available to local people, the school, sports clubs and other interested groups.
